Our Move to Utah, December 2013

Me following Josh on our move to Utah

We didn't pull out our cameras for this journey and I wish we would have, because it was long and eventful.

First, we were three and a half days late leaving. This mattered because my Dad's new wife Elaine was taking care of all three kids. They had the kids from the day after Thanksgiving until the next weekend. We hadn't packed any of their clothes because we hadn't planned to have them stay. They were at my dad's house at the land for the weekend and then Elaine brought my kids with her through San Antonio to grab more things and then headed up to her place in Glenn Rose. Her son Grant was with them and they had fun with him.  Our original plan was to join them on Tuesday afternoon. We were going to spend the night and then get an early start.  Unfortunately we didn't leave until F R I D A Y night!  Everything was taking so long to wrap up.  Wouldn't you know it, we had to get $800 worth of work done on our van on Friday afternoon to safely make the trip. This delay pushed us right up to an ice storm that was coming into Glenn Rose, where Elaine owns a country home, and where our kids were. We pulled in just as the ice storm hit about 9 PM  We ran inside and got tucked in safely.  When we woke up in the morning our cars were iced in. Everything was iced over. Everything was cancelled all around.  There was no school, no church on Sunday, no buying anything at the store. We couldn't even open the doors to the cars the first day.  We ended up leaving Sunday afternoon when we (barely) were able to get the cars out of the drive way.
The kids had fun with Grandma Elaine though.  They got to shoot BB guns, ride a four wheeler, Elaine's son let the kids drive the van on the dirty road, they went to a dinosaur park, watched frozen, played in unheard of snow in Texas, played with Goats and chickens, met the farm cat (Gary) and the farm dog (Snowie) and some step? cousins who live at Grandma Elaine's house, and generally got completely spoiled.
Our trip took longer at every stage than we had hoped, but was generally uneventful once we got out of Texas and the really bad weather and roads. We met up with a friend, David Shelley in Tucson at the In N Out Burger, and then were on to Dan and Michelle's house in Tempe.  We joked that Josh should stay there because as soon as we did get to Utah, he was going to have to pack for a week long trip to Phoenix with his dad for his new business.
The next day we stayed in St. George, where it was snowed and iced over.  I procured food from three fast food restaurants because nobody could agree. By the time I got back two out of three kids were asleep. Waste o' money.
The next and final day, just as we were entering into Payson, Josh's car blew a tire. I was driving behind him and it was a little dangerous the way the tire came flying.  We pulled over in the snow.  And the tire, which was still rolling came rolling up, like an obedient dog and fell next to the cars.  It was a comedic event, though it was stressful. I was wearing flip flops and standing in a foot of snow.  We had to unpack the over-packed trunk to get out the spare tire.  My feet were completely numb, but I was laughing out loud at the near miss of disaster, but ridiculously close proximity of our final destination.  We managed to get on a spare and limp into town to a tire store.  I am so glad that happened within reach of a town!  That was Tuesday. So it took us four days to get to Josh's parents' house.
Thursday was Josh's trip to Phoenix.  We hoped to have several days to organize our move into the new house and just take a break.  But, there is no break for the weary.  That is, Josh. We took a good long break without him.
Next up...procuring winter clothes.
