McDonald's- justification, fun, and repulsion

McDonald's.

Just the thought of eating there actually makes me gain weight. I can feel the pounds piling on. Perhaps it is just my stomach's pit reaction as it turns and remembers the last time I ate there.

I used to order a Happy Meal for Caleb and get myself a double cheeseburger, a spicy chicken sandwich and a water. Two bucks! I thought that sounded okay until one day I was looking at the Happy Meal bag while I was eating. They listed calories associated with Happy Meal choices. Apples vs. fries, box drink vs. milk, etc. Then they listed the calories for a Double Cheeseburger (I don't know why) and I about threw up mid eating. If you have ever had a Double Cheeseburger, you know they are not really that big. It has 440 calories! The dollar menu spicy chicken is not even listed, but it is deep fried and has a ton of mayo on it. I would guess it is about 500. So I was eating a "light" lunch of nearly a 1,000 calories. That doesn't even count the fries I pillfered off of Caleb.

So my friend Jen tells her little boy that McDonald's is poisonous. Which, I suppose could be true. She recommend that I watch "Super Size Me." Which I also recommend. I will never feel the same about McDonald's again.

Here's my deal: I don't mind consuming lots of calories on occasion, but it sure as heck better be worth it. This is why the last few times I went to McDonald's I brought in my own food. Cafe Rio, and a to go shake from Leatherby's. Now that is worth it.

That being said, McDonald's offers a few lures not to be reckoned with...the toys and the price. So I have to admit we have had some good family fun there.

Besides, how else are kids going to learn how to write the letter M?

Hey Julie,

I am totally with you--I get sick smelling McDonald's from a mile away. I think it is an unavoidable place, however, if you have children. Especially in the winter, the indoor playgrounds are lifesavers. Chad's grandma loves to take our boys there about once/week, so I've figured out a healthy meal to get. I always buy the grilled BBQ chipotle wrap, a side salad with balsamic vinegarette and a water. The salad and dressing combined are 80 calories and the wrap was either 260 or 360 (can't remember at the moment). Anyhow, not too bad considering it's fast food.

I like Wendy's. You still get the toy...but better grown-up food. A small chili (no cheese), a small green side-salad with reduced-fat dressing, and a small order of chicken tenders is a BIG meal with not too many calories!

But...then there is the problem with learning to write the letter M...

Ugh.. Supersize me.

Another deterrent from eating hamburgers at McDonald's is that fact that the patty doesn’t come from one cow, but can have parts from thousands of cows. They are all ground up into a large vat and then squeezed out and sliced into patty form. Delicious.

Barf.
